Improvement notice for Edinburgh cooling tower

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has served an improvement notice on the North British Distillery Company Ltd for alleged failures to control the risk of legionella in a cooling tower. This news come as the number of confirmed and suspected cases of Legionnaires' disease has tipped the 80 person mark.

The notice was served for a failure to devise and implement a sustained and effective biocide contol programme in a cooling tower.

However, the HSE has stated that the issuing of the improvement notice does not mean that this cooling tower is the source of the outbreak. Such notices can be issued when the HSE believes that correct procedures are not being followed but there is no immediate risk to workers and the public.

The improvement notice requires the company to make sure that appropriate controls are in place by 29 June 2012.
