Introduction
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) was established under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
The HSE was a body appointed by the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) to advise and assist the HSC with its functions. It is responsible for:
- enforcement of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and any regulations made under it;
- the carrying out of inspections.
In carrying out its enforcement role, the HSE carries out inspections and investigations, responds to complaints, serves notices and prosecutes.
