Firm fined for driver death

An Armagh company, Coyle Fabrications Ltd, has been fined £15,000 plus £1,026 costs after an employee was fatally injured.

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSE NI) brought charges for a breach of health and safety legislation relating to the lack of a safe system of work.

The worker who was employed as a lorry driver fell from the bed of a flatbed lorry while manually loading a box believed to weigh 126kg.

HSE NI deputy chief executive, Bryan Monson said, "We would remind companies of the need to ensure that they assess the risks of all activities carried out by their employees. They must ensure that the control measures identified in the risk assessment to maintain a safe system of work are properly planned, implemented and maintained."
