Fine for fatal accident

On Wednesday 19 December 2007 at Enniskillen Crown Court, B O'Neill Contracts were fined £20,000 after pleading guilty to two charges brought against them by the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSE NI) for breaches of health and safety legislation.

The charges relate to a fatal accident that occurred on 19 August 2004 at Skip Waste Management, Farlough Road, Dungannon. James Harrington, a 55 year old employee received fatal injuries when he was crushed by a telescopic handler during a recycling operation. The two charges relate to a lack of training for the operator of the telescopic handler and a failure to prepare a risk assessment for the operation in question.

This tragic incident has caused the HSE NI to remind companies of the need to make sure that personnel are adequately trained and that work is properly planned to prevent further work-related injuries and deaths.
