Factory blaze in Antrim

An investigation is currently underway to establish the cause of a fire at a factory in Antrim.

The blaze started at lunchtime on Monday 22 September at the Camden Group Factory at the Caulside Drive Estate. More than 50 people had to be moved from their homes for a time as the factory, which supplies PVCU window frames, doors, panels and conservatories, contained hazardous chemicals.

Nine fire trucks and three specialist appliances tackled the fire, and firefighters stayed at the scene overnight to dampen down the building. Although they used extension ladders to get at the flames from above, part of the factory is reported to have been completely destroyed.

At its height, the blaze could be seen from as far as 10 miles away, and thick plumes of smoke were visible in Glengormley. Assistant group commander Stanley Bentley said that teams of people with specialist knowledge about the handling of chemicals were at the scene. "We expect to be here for a considerable time, especially as it is not yet known what had caused the fire."
