Delta blues

A Belfast skip hire company has been fined a total of £17,000 after pleading guilty to breaches of waste management legislation. The Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland (DoE NI) said in court that there was the potential to cause harm to human health from the illegal waste.

When DoE NI staff visited the Delta Skips site on the Upper Springfield Road last year, it was found to contain 600 tonnes of controlled waste, including tyres, waste food and gas cylinders. The site did not have planning permission and was not licensed for the waste. Delta pleaded guilty to three charges under the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order SI 1997/2778 and agreed to compensate the DoE NI for loss of revenue resulting from failure to pay the required waste management licence fee and the planning approval fee.

DoE NI staff inspecting the site said significant amounts of domestic and food waste had attracted vermin. They also noted that the site, which was less than 100 yards from a large residential development, was of potential harm to human health in the area as it had no appropriate containment measures in place at the time of the inspection.
