Company fined after worker fatally injured

McCalls Special Products Limited based in Sheffield has been fined £200,000 after the death of an agency worker.

The company manufactures and supplies high-strength bar and cable systems. Mr Gerrard, 47, had only been working at the site for three weeks when he was involved in the incident. His clothes were caught in a machine used to apply adhesive tape to bars to prevent corrosion. As a result he was pulled into the machine and suffered fatal crush injuries.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Inspector, Denise Fotheringham said:

''The law requires that employers take all reasonable steps to guard against access to such dangerous parts of machinery. This risk associated with this machine should have been assessed by the company - and it was not. It should have been adequately guarded - and it was not. Simple safety precautions would have prevented this awful incident happening.''

The company pleaded guilty to breaches of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Sheffield Crown Court fined the company £200,000 and ordered them to pay costs of £16,804.
