Farming company Blankney Estates Ltd were prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after exposing tenants of one of their rental houses in Lincolnshire to dangerous levels of asbestos.
A three year old girl was among those exposed at the property after work was carried out to remove an asbestos-lagged tank from the property. The Court was told how the company failed to properly manage deteriorating asbestos materials and did not ensure work to remove the asbestos-lagged tank was properly planned and carried out by competent contractors.
The company pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 at Lincoln Crown Court. They were fined £50,000 and ordered to pay £20,000 in costs.
Directors of family-owned demolition company ART Dismantling Co Ltd who carried out the work on the property were also fined. Adam Robert Thurlby and John Thurlby were fined £12,500 each and ordered to pay £7,500 in costs after being found guilty of breaches of the Control of Asbestos Regulations SI 2006/2739.
Michael Grace Ltd, a plumbing company who were also involved in the work on the property were found guilty of three offences under the Control of Asbestos Regulations SI 2006/2739 and were fined £10,000 along with £5,000 in costs.
