Waste offence round up

There have been a number of successful prosecutions this month for breaches of the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order SI 1997/2778.

In the first case, a man from Strabane was fined a total of £5,070 at Strabane Magistrates' Court after environmental crime officers from the Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) visited a site last year. They found large amounts of controlled waste, consisting of rubble and general building waste mixed with clay and soil near the Mourne River.

Construction company Grafton Homes (NI) Ltd were fined £5,000 at Lisburn Magistrates' Court following an inspection at Dromore Road, Hillsborough, in response to complaints. The site contained construction and demolition waste including bricks, concrete, wood, metals and plastics. The site was unlicensed to accept any waste material.

Finally, a man was fined a total of £1,061 at Omagh Magistrates' Court after the EHS visited his site on the Drumnakilly Road, Omagh, which contained an estimated 75,000 tonnes of construction and demolition waste. The waste consisted of concrete, brick and subsoil.
