From 6am on 1 July 2007 it became illegal to smoke in all enclosed public places in England, including most workplaces, offices, pubs, restaurants and public transport. Those found smoking can face on the spot fixed penalty fines of £50, while those in charge of premises could be fined £2,500 for allowing smoking. There is also a fine of £200 for failing to display adequate no-smoking signs. These could well be higher if the offences continue and the person in question is prosecuted.
England is the last country in the UK to go smoke-free and follows on from Scotland on March 2006, Northern Ireland on 20 April 2007 and Wales on 2 April 2007.
