Tyrone tyred of pollution

A farmer and haulage contractor of Crevenagh Road, Omagh was fined a total of £5,000 at Omagh Crown Court on 11 October 2007 for a series of pollution offences.

Officers of the Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) investigated a dump site owned by the 61 year old man on Crevenagh Road on 6 April and 18 May 2004. On both occasions they discovered quantities of waste which included tyres, plastic bags, silage wrap, food packaging, automotive parts, newspapers, decaying foodstuffs and partly decomposed animals. Some of the domestic waste deposited on the site was identified as originating from Cork and Wexford.

The man pleaded guilty to five waste charges under the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order SI 1997/2778, and was fined £1,000 for each. These related to the depositing, keeping, disposing or treating of controlled waste on land without, or in contrary to, the provisions of a waste management licence. He also received a term of nine months imprisonment, which was suspended for 12 months.
