Thames Water handed 8.5 million pound fine

Thames Water have been handed another massive fine, this time £8.5 million.

The fine, the maximum allowed for the offence under the sentencing guidelines, was handed down due to Thames missing water leakage targets.

Ofwat, the water industry regulator, called the offence "unacceptable".

Leaks from Thames Water increased by 5% over the last year, the same as 35 million litres per day. This is the same as 180 litres per day per property that is supplied by Thames Water.

The large penalty comes after the company were given a record breaking £20.3 million fine for sewage leaks in March of this year.

Profits for the company tumbled by 86% according to the water supplier's annual report.
