The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has launched a consultation into the implementation of Clean Air Zones in England.
Clean Air Zones are areas where action is focussed to improve air quality and the cleanest vehicles are encouraged.
DEFRA's ambition is for the UK to have some of the very best air quality in the world and Clean Air Zones are designed to help deliver this.
The consultation sets out that the Government would require the implementation of Clean Air Zones in five cities including Birmingham, Derby, Leeds, Nottingham and Southampton.
In the national air quality plan for nitrogen dioxide, published in December 2015, the Government committed to consulting on the draft framework for Clean Air Zones in 2016.
It runs from 13 October 2016 until 9 December 2016.
