Man Utd top CRC League Table

In the first Energy Efficiency League Table published by the Environment Agency, in which businesses and public sector bodies are ranked according to their efforts to improve energy efficiency, organisations such as Manchester United, British American Tobacco and Ofgem have come out on top.

However, well-known brands including Virgin Atlantic, Vue Cinemas and Welcome Break have been named as lacking in their action on energy efficiency and have joined many others at the bottom of the league.

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme Performance League awards organisations an "early action metric" percentage which is based on the steps that the organisation has taken to reduce emissions before or during Phase 1 of the CRC Scheme.

CRC enforcer, the Environment Agency, said that over 60% of organisations have taken action by installing smart meters and obtaining a certificate for "good energy management" from the Carbon Trust or other accreditation schemes.

"It's very encouraging that six out of 10 organisations taking part in the scheme have taken steps to improve their energy management," the Environment Agency's director of Environment and Business, Ed Mitchell, said. "The UK needs its high-street shops, major businesses, councils, Government departments and other big energy users to use less electricity to help meet tough carbon reduction targets."
