HSE offers planning advice

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), as a statutory consultee in the town planning process, offers land use planning advice to local planning authorities on proposed developments near to major hazard sites or a major accident hazard pipeline.

As part of that role, the HSE is offering an enhanced advice service, including:

  • an enhanced pre-application service;
  • the development of an online service allowing developers to make enquiries about any plot of land;
  • increased access to the HSE's assessment tools and techniques.

The HSE began to roll out the service in July 2014 and it will be fully operational by March 2015. As part of the service, developers will have three options to choose from. Option 1 is free and will confirm whether the HSE will be a consultee for a proposed development or not. Option 2 offers advice for proposed developments within a consultation zone and Option 3 offers a bespoke service. However, Options 2 and 3 carry a fee.

The enhanced service is part of the HSE's Health and Safety Laboratory, and is available at www.hsl.gov.uk/products/lupa.
