Cheese firm breached safety legislation

A dairy processor, Glanbia Cheese Ltd, has been fined £100,000 after pleading guilty to two health and safety breaches.

The company was charged by the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSE NI) in relation to a fatal accident that occurred in February 2006, involving an employee who was crushed in an auger in the bottom of a hopper.

The company accepted that it had failed to ensure a safe system of work and that there had been inadequate prevention of access to dangerous parts of machinery.

A HSE NI spokesman said that companies needed to make sure that personnel were properly trained, work was properly planned and that measures were taken to prevent access to any part of dangerous machinery, in order to prevent further tragic work-related injuries and deaths, particularly during maintenance and cleaning activities.
