Biomass boiler blowout

Omagh Leisure Complex had to close on Tuesday 19 February 2008, and a workman was taken to hospital following an accident while installing a new biomass boiler on the Old Mountfield Road Site. The emergency services attended the scene and an employee of the contractor installing and commissioning the new environmentally friendly boiler received minor injuries. The causes of the incident are currently being investigated and the damage is being examined.

The leisure centre was closed to the public for the rest of the day as heat could not be provided during the transition between the two fuel sources. It did however open for business as usual on Wednesday 20 February and reverted to the original oil burner while repairs were carried out.

Omagh Town Councillor Paddy McGowan, who lives adjacent to the leisure centre said he was still unaware of the exact details concerning the incident but was thankful no-one was seriously injured. "There was some disruption caused as the centre had to close on Tuesday because the heating couldn't be provided but it is good to see things have now got back to normal and I hope the man that was injured recovers fully as quickly as possible. I have no doubt that all health and safety precautions were taken and this is just one of those things that happens that you cannot legislate for no matter what precautions you take. It was an unfortunate accident but I am sure it will not be repeated."
