Acid test for Batteries Directive

A consultation has been issued on draft regulations for implementing the requirements of Directive 2006/66/EC, on batteries and accumulators and waste batteries and accumulators in the UK.

The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) is seeking the views of producers, distributors, collectors and recyclers of batteries and accumulators, and items containing batteries and accumulators, on the proposed approach for implementing the provisions relating to the marketing of new batteries and accumulators and the design of certain battery-powered appliances. All responses will help the Government finalise the legislation that is needed to transpose the Directive into UK law.

This consultation follows a recent consultation document that was issued on 20 December 2007 (7 January 2008 in Northern Ireland). The Government has since decided to separate the implementation of the provisions relating to the marketing of new batteries from the environmental protection provisions on the collection, treatment and recycling of waste batteries.

All responses to this consultation must be made by 20 June 2008, and a further consultation document on the implementation of any outstanding provisions will be issued in the Summer.
