WEEE are growing impatient

Further delays to the UK implementation of the WEEE Directive became apparent this month, after the DTI announced that they were intending to immediately review its progress, following failed discussions between themselves, local government and companies over who should take financial responsibility. The UK is already considerably late in implementing the Directive and producer registration was planned to begin in January 2006, however this will now be put on hold for the time being. Additional Regulations are also being planned by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), along with guidance on treatment operations, which will be brought into force alongside the producer responsibility requirements.

This may not be enough to prevent the UK being taken to the European Court of Justice, as the WEEE Directive should have been implemented in August 2004
