Safety incident taking the PSNI

A case taken by the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSE NI) against the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), has been adjourned for one month at Strabane Magistrates Court, on 8 February. The Chief Constable's office face two charges as the result of an incident on 17 March 2003, which saw a local man die after becoming caught in the automatic gates at Strabane PSNI station.

The HSE NI have brought charges of failing to ensure a workplace complies with health and safety legislation, like the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order SI 1978/1039, including a requirement that any powered doors and gates have suitable and effective features to prevent them causing injury by trapping anyone and ensuring that persons not employed who may be affected are not exposed to risks to their health and safety.

The Crown Solicitors office made an application to adjourn, citing that they had only just received the papers a few days previously and they required more time to consider a number of technical issues involved in the case. It will now take place on 8 March 2007.
