Recycling accidents on the increase

The recycling industry has recorded yet another fatal accident, where an employee at JFC plastics became trapped and crushed in a plastic bottle repossessing machine at their St Helens site. In August, an employee of SITA UK Ltd. in Wiltshire, was killed by cardboard baling equipment and within the space of a few days, another man died in Glasgow in a waste/recycling business workplace transport accident.

In addition, in June an employee of Eden Waste Recycling Ltd. of central Scotland lost an arm at the shoulder. The waste and recycling industry consistently has poor accident figures, and is the subject of several HSE initiatives. Between 1 April 2001 and 31 March 2002 there were 17 fatalities, 548 major injuries and 3,186 injuries that kept employees off work.
