Pollution reports published

A new EHS Northern Ireland Air Quality Monitoring Report has just been published for 2004, which shows that air quality is good in Northern Ireland for most of the time.

Northern Ireland is required to meet air quality objectives under the Environment (Northern Ireland) Order SI 2002/3153 for carbon monoxide, benzene, 1, 3-butadiene, lead, sulphur dioxide and particulate matter and monitoring results show these objectives were met, with the exception of particulate matter.

In addition, the Water Pollution Incidents and Enforcement Report for 2004 has revealed that incidents affecting water in Northern Ireland dropped last year. A total of 2,207 water pollution reports were investigated in 2004, with 1,227 confirmed as having an impact on water. This is a decrease of 13.2% from 2003.
