Not the best way to dispose of asbestos

The owner of the Fascia Company have been fined a total of £4,020 after pleading guilty to offences with regard to the deposit of asbestos waste and a failure to provide information to the Environment Agency on the movement of such waste. On 5 April 2005, the Agency visited the company premises in Nottingham after reports that materials containing asbestos had been brought back to the site. Plastic sacks were found with protruding cement-bonded asbestos. Documentation was then requested to show the correct movement of asbestos, but this was not received and prosecution followed.

Further investigations revealed that asbestos had been removed by a specialist removal company, and although systems were in place to prevent the waste from being brought back to the site, they were not sufficient to prevent the offence from occurring.

In other asbestos news, the consultation period on amendments to the current asbestos legislation ran out on 31 January 2006. The new Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2006, which will come into force in April, essentially combine the current provisions on controls, licensing and prohibitions into one set of Regulations.
