Firm joins waste offenders list

An Enniskillen joinery firm has been fined this month for the illegal burning of waste. John Sheridan and Sons Ltd received the £3,500 fine at Enniskillen Magistrates Court, after pleading guilty to six charges under the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order SI 1997/2778. The Court heard that Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) officers inspected the joinery premises on 20 January 2006, where they discovered evidence of controlled waste being burned and having being burned on the site.

On 26 January 2006, a notice was sent to the company informing them that the burning of controlled waste was illegal. The EHS issued another notice on 17 February 2007, instructing them to remove all controlled wastes from the site, to make sure that waste transfer notes were sent to the EHS and that all waste be moved to a registered site. EHS officers then observed controlled wastes being buried on the Sheridan site on 7 March 2007, along with further burning incidents throughout the month.
