The Scottish Executive is currently consulting on the first in a series of guides with regard to the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005, which will come into force in 2006. These sector-specific guides will inform the relevant people who have responsibilities for non-domestic premises, and will not set prescriptive standards but will summarise the new fire safety responsibilities and suggest courses of action in order to ensure compliance with the legislation.
In other fire safety news, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order SI 2005/1541 comes into force on 1 April in England and Wales. In preparation, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, the London Fire Service and the Buildings Research Establishment are currently publicising the new provisions. In addition, they offer to carry out risk assessments on your behalf or train you to become an assessor.
