Clifton Steel Ltd of Fazeley Street, Birmingham, have been fined £150,000 with £20,000 costs after admitting breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. On 17 January 2002, an employee was operating a crane to move a steel coil when he was crushed against it and killed after a nearby stack of coils moved. The stack had not been set up safely and it is believed that the slightest vibration, even from the operation of the crane, may have caused it to move and become unstable.
The Health and Safety Executive has emphasised that the storage and moving of steel coils is a dangerous business and should be subject to a careful risk assessment and expert help.
