Company fined for guarding failures

The Amtico Company Limited of Coventry, have been fined a total of £48,567 after pleading guilty to breaching section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. They failed to take effective measures to prevent access to dangerous parts of machinery in order to avoid the risk of serious injuries. In December 2004, a machine operative was drawn into in-running nip rollers at the pre-embossing station of a laminator machine as he was threading a piece of PVC in between two rollers. He became trapped and the heat from the rollers caused third degree burns to his forearm. A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that a fixed guard for the machine had never been put in place.
