Anglers in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales have reacted with anger following a chemical spill which killed around 1,000 fish in the Taf Fechan. The anglers spent 5 years creating a natural wild fishery for brown trout and minnows, which is in ruins after 3 tonnes of aluminium sulphate leaked from a Pontsticill treatment works on Sunday 13 August. The Environment Agency are continuing to investigate the incident which turned the water a "milky white" and affected a 5 km stretch of the river. However, they have reported that the chemicals have dispersed and the water quality has returned to normal.
This marks a bad period for Welsh Water, following 2 oil slicks in as many months in the Menai Strait, along the North Wales coast, as reported in the July and August Monthly Bulletins.
