£2 million grant scheme for historic farm buildings

The Government has announced a new £2 million grant scheme available to land managers to restore their historic farm buildings.

The scheme hopes to restore and save historic farm buildings from falling out of use in English National Parks.

The Historic Building Restoration Grant is starting in Northumberland, Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Lake District and Dartmoor in order to pilot the results.

Owners of historic farm buildings can apply for a grant which can cover up to 80% of restoration costs.

Restoration can include:

  • replacing roofs;
  • weatherproofing exteriors;
  • other restoration works which mean the building can be used again for farming.

Applications for the scheme can be made until 31 January 2019, and approved applicants will have two years to complete any work.

As part of the grant, applicants will be supported in implementing their restoration through implementation plans and management plans with the help of conservation consultants if needed.

Minister for National Parks at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), Lord Gardiner, commented:

"I am delighted that we are able to open this new set of grants supporting the restoration of traditional farm buildings. Land managers who apply for this scheme will not only be safeguarding our rural history and culture, but also regenerating traditional buildings for use today and for future generations."
