ECHA considering restriction of chromium trioxide under REACH

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has launched a call for evidence to support the preparation of the Restriction Report for chromium (VI) substances under Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH).

The consultation covers two substances of very high concern which lead to exposure to hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI):

  • chromium trioxide is the Cr(VI) substance that generates the largest number of applications for authorisation and must be included in the scope of the restriction; and
  • chromic and dichromic acids, a group of acids generated from chromium trioxide, that act as a substitute for that substance.

These substances are mainly used in chrome plating and coating of surfaces, which typically involve extra additives that affect the plating process but do not react with the trioxide.

The purpose of this consultation is to gather specific information on the possible response of the affected industry to various binding Scientific Limit Values for Cr(VI) exposure and emissions to air and water. Additionally, other stakeholders may submit their responses on these proposals, relevant to the preparation of Annex XV restriction dossier on Cr(VI) compounds.

This consultation is open from 13 December 2024 until 13 February 2024. The way to respond is by completing an online survey within the specified timeframe.
