Gas fitter prosecuted for illegal work

A gas fitter from Burnley has been given a 15 month community sentence after he carried our work without being registered on the Gas Safe register.

Adam Kilbride falsely claimed to be gas safe registered and carried out work on two properties on December 2018 and January 2019 in Burnley.

When a Gas Safe inspector was called by an occupier of one of the properties, the work was found to be "at risk" and "not to current standards".

Adam Kilbride pleaded guilty to breaches of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations SI 1998/2451 after an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). He was sentenced to a 15 month community order and 100 hours unpaid work. He was ordered to pay £6000 costs and £400 in compensation to the homeowner.

HSE inspector Caroline Shorrock commented: "Adam Kilbride undertook gas work which he knew he was not registered to do. All gas work must be done by registered Gas Safe engineers to ensure the highest standards are met in order to prevent injury and loss of life. Installers will be prosecuted if they carry out gas work without the proper qualifications. We would advise all householders to check that anyone they allow to work on the gas supply is gas safe registered. This can be done at the Gas Safe Register website".
