European Mobility Week starts on Saturday!

Every year, from 16 to 22 September, the European Commission's flagship awareness-raising campaign on sustainable urban mobility, invites towns and cities from across Europe, and beyond, to participate in European Mobility Week.

During the week almost 3,000 towns and cities encourage behavioural change in favour of active mobility, public transport, and other clean, intelligent transport solutions, by organising awareness-raising activities and events with local stakeholders.

This years theme is "save energy", for the following reasons:

  • energy and mobility poverty are rising due to higher costs of residents and businesses;
  • operating public transport is a high expense for city budgets;
  • following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it is crucial to reduce our dependency on Russian oil and shift to sustainable energy sources;
  • the climate crisis is ever present, and we need a carbon-neutral Europe by 2050.

Reducing energy consumption aligns with the overall goals of European Mobility Week:

  • encouraging sustainable mobility;
  • fostering active transport;
  • creating liveable cities.

Collective action to reduce energy use has already made a positive impact on fuel reserves and prices, but more can be done. Five tips to help save energy include:

  • use public transport;
  • be active by travelling by foot or bicycle;
  • feel the freedom of moving around without a car;
  • reduce the number of unnecessary car trips;
  • take it slow, as by reducing your speed you can reduce your fuel bill.
