Scottish Government announce EV charging points for all new-builds

The Scottish Government has promised that by the end of the year it will publish the secondary legislation needed to ensure that developers provide electric vehicle (EV) charge points in new residential and non-residential buildings.

This will require changes to the energy standards in the Building (Scotland) Regulations SSI 2004/406.

These proposals are designed to support and encourage the growing uptake of electric vehicles, by ensuring that all new homes, including flats, with a dedicated car parking space, are built with electric charge points.

This will make charging easier, cheaper and more convenient for drivers.

The new building regulations will mean that:

  • new residential buildings with a parking space have at least one EV charge point with a minimum 7kW rating;
  • there will be requirements for residential and non-residential buildings undergoing a major renovation to provide charge points.
