ECHA launches new chemical database

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has launched a new database containing chemicals registrations required under Regulation (EC) 1907/2006, on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH). The new database is intended to allow ECHA to better handle the growing diversity and quantity of data it holds.

The new database, named ECHA CHEM, aims to help the public access a growing amount of information that ECHA holds, particularly industry-submitted data and information generated through chemicals registrations. It contains information on all REACH registrations. As it stands, there are over 100,000 registrations. As the database develops over 2024, it will contain the redesigned Classification and Labelling inventory followed by a set of regulatory lists.

This means that the new database doesn't contain all relevant data just yet. As a result, until the transition is complete, users might need to consult both ECHA CHEM and the old chemicals database.

In order to help people adjust to the new database, ECHA has published a support page explaining how it will develop over 2024.

Mercedes Viñas, ECHA’s Director of Submissions and Interaction, said “ECHA CHEM is a significant step forward in enhancing our service for sharing data on chemicals gathered through ECHA’s current activities. It makes the information available online within a stable system and in a user-friendly manner.”
