Prosecution for gas installer

A gas installer in Cardiff has been prosecuted after claiming to be gas safe and carrying out gas work when they were not gas safe registered.

Jordan Louis Hare undertook a range of gas work at four domestic properties including installing gas boilers, modifying gas pipework and installing a gas hob. All of the work was carried out between September 2016 and March 2018, with Mr Hare not holding the necessary Gas Safe registration.

During the inspection, the work carried out by Mr Hare was said to be "immediately dangerous", "at risk", "not to current standards" or "building regulations non-compliant", which placed the occupants and the public in danger and exposed to possible gas escape.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that Mr Harework had acted both deliberately and fraudulently by pretending to be Gas Safe registered and engaging in work that he was not competent to do.

Jordan Louis Hare pleaded guilty to breaching the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations SI 1998/2451 and the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. For the prosecution, he was given a ten-month custodial sentence suspended for 18 months, ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work, and pay costs of £5,000 and £125 compensation.

HSE Inspector Gethyn Jones said after the hearing:

"Jordan Hare undertook gas work which he knew he was not registered to do. All gas work must be done by registered Gas Safe engineers to ensure the highest standards are met to prevent injury and loss of life. Householders should check that the engineer carrying out gas work in their home is registered with Gas Safe."
