A new report has stated that emissions from the production of cement have more than doubled in the last 20 years.
The report produced by a greenhouse gas emissions scientist at Norway’s CICERO Center for Climate Research found that in 2021 emissions from the cement sector accounted for over 7% of global CO2 emissions. This means emissions from cement manufacture reached 2.9 billion tonnes.
In 2002, emissions from cement production for buildings, roads and other infrastructure were around 1.4 billion tonnes.
China is the largest producer of cement and accounts for around 55% of global cement production. The second-largest producer in India makes 8% of global cement.
The International Energy Agency estimated that in order to get on track to meet net-zero emissions by 2050, there needs to be a 3% annual decline in the amount of emissions from cement production.
