A Newtownabbey firm has become the first company in the UK to be declared as an authorised facility for the recycling and disposal of electronic computer hardware. Asset Management Ireland (AMI) is now an Approved Authorised Treatment Facility under the accreditation scheme established under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations SI 2006/3289. The remaining provisions of the WEEE Regulations on distributor take-back came into force on 1 July 2007.
The company specialises in removing data from old computers before recycling or remarketing the hardware. They operate mainly in the Government and business marketplace, where such data cleansing is paramount prior to disposal. The accreditation was awarded in recognition of AMI's high standards in secure and environmentally friendly operating procedures, and the firm has recently achieved the ISO 14001 environmental quality standard to help them comply with the WEEE Regulations, which aims to minimise the impact of electrical and electronic equipment on the environment.
