UK Government "falling behind" on electric car pledge

The Government's goal of ultra low emission cars making up 9% of cars by 2020 have been predicted to be missed by half that target, in forecasts from the Department for Transport (DfT).

The Environmental Audit Committee has said the Government are not promoting the incentives available whilst infrastructure must serve to encourage drivers to adopt electric cars.

Mary Creagh, chairwoman of the Committee, said: “The uptake of ultra-low emission vehicles is too low to meet the UK’s climate change targets at the lowest cost to the public. Air quality targets that were supposed to be met in 2010 won’t be hit until 2020 at the earliest."

The committee also called on ministers to address the fallout of the VW emissions scandal, which could include bringing a prosecution against the company, and for the rail industry to clarify its steps towards reducing emissions, particularly from diesel engines.
