Traffic blocked in five UK cities due to environmental protests

A series of demonstrations across the UK has left traffic disrupted in protest of various environmental issues on 15 July 2019.

Extinction Rebellion, the environmental activist group, has carried out protests in:

  • London;
  • Cardiff;
  • Leeds;
  • Bristol;
  • Glasgow.

This is in order to start off what they have described as their "summer uprising". The protests themselves have caused disruption to traffic in parts of the cities, using large boats installed at each location, branded with the message "Act Now!". The group said it would carry out "creative acts of disobedience" including blocking roads and bridges, and to hold educational workshops. Action is to continue for a week.

The group has called for greater governmental action in response on the rising climate crisis. The group is demanding that the government prevent further losses to biodiversity and commit to producing net-zero greenhouse gases by 2025. Each city had a different ecological threat to protest, ranging from rising sea levels, floods, wildfires, crop failures and extreme weather.

More than 15 police vans accompanied a crowd of 250 protesters in London. Bristol Bridge was closed as a result of the protests and South Wales police said roads in Cardiff city centre were blocked.

Extinction Rebellion had previously disrupted London with 11-day of protests in April - shown as the biggest act of civil disobedience in recent British history.
