A number of the world's top 25 PR companies have introduced a boycott of organisations that deny climate change.
It is a move that will further emphasize the urgency to admit to a growing problem in an effort to tackle it.
“We would not knowingly partner with a client who denies the existence of climate change,” said Rhian Rotz, spokesman for WE, one of the PR companies backing the new, unofficial partnering rule.
According to the Guardian, "several of the companies, such as WPP, WE, Oglivy, and Edelman have ambitious in-house programmes for reducing their carbon footprint."
UK-based WPP, the world’s largest advertising firm by revenue, said taking on a client who was a climate change sceptic and denier would violate company guidelines.
Cedrec's take
It is encouraging to see proactive measures taken by companies who are not under the same amount of pressure to combat climate change. It seems so much pressure is placed on oil companies, transportation and energy companies, that other industries can slip beneath the radar.
To see top PR companies making an effort to curtail the visibility of climate change denial is a valuable step towards increasing awareness, energy efficiency and climate conservation.
