Tesla apply to become energy supplier in UK

Elon Musk's company, Tesla have applied to generate electricity in the UK market documents from the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (ofgem) reveal.

Tesla, usually known more for its cars, also makes batteries that can store renewable energy on an industrial and domestic scale.

As a way to sell excess energy back to the grid, Tesla have developed software known as Autobidder.

This technology is already in use in South Australia in its Hornsdale Power Reserve. The company built the world's-largest lithium-ion battery in South Australia, which Tesla suggests can provide enough power for more than 30,000 homes. Tesla wouldn't comment on their plans for the UK.

The domestic home version of the Tesla battery known as the Powerwall requires solar panels and costs thousands of pounds.

The application made to the UK's Gas and Electricity Markets Authority has been made "for the purpose of giving a supply to any premises or enabling a supply to be so given" and would be for any area of "Great Britain, the territorial sea adjacent to Great Britain or in a Renewable Energy Zone".

Octopus also recently partnered with Tesla to offer cheaper energy for Tesla car owners who have solar panels or a Powerwall in the UK.
