The fastest growing source of energy last year, worldwide, was solar power outstripping the growth of other forms of power generation for the first time.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) stated two-thirds of power added to the world's grid in 2016 was renewable energy.
Previously the biggest new source of power generation was coal, but this has now been over taken by new solar capacity. It is thought that the shift has been driven largely by steps in China to install solar panels and also falling prices and Government policies.
The IEA said, "What we are witnessing is the birth of a new era in solar photovoltaics. We expect that solar PV capacity growth will be higher than any other renewable technology up to 2022."
The IEA is funded by 28 member Governments and had previously underestimated the speed at which green energy was growing. Renewable energy forecasts for 2022 have been revised upwards on last years forecast.
