Skyscraper approved for London

A 73 storey skyscraper has been approved for London's financial district that will stand almost as high as the Shard.

Nicknamed the Trellis, at over 300 metres, it will be the second highest building Western Europe, after the Shard.

The Aviva Tower will be demolished and the Trellis will be built on that site. Tenant's are still occupying the Aviva Tower so it's thought that it will not be completed until some point in the 2020s.

The original design was 309.6 metres, but this was reduced because of restrictions relating to London's airspace.

Chris Hayward, chairman of the City of London Corporation's planning and transportation committee, described the building as a truly unique building that fits in well with the City's history, as well as future ambitions for growth.

He said: "Over the next 30 years I expect that we will need to deliver office space for more than 50, 000 extra workers within the Square Mile, and this development is important in reaching that end goal."

The building has been designed by architect Eric Parry for the Singaporean developers Aroland Holdings.
