RTPI sets out key demands in manifesto for next Government

The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) is demanding that planning authorities must be adequately resourced if they are to deliver on climate change, populations and well-designed sustainable places.

In its manifesto for the next Government, sent to every MP seeking re-election, the RTPI also calls for the next Government to ensure "world-leading" legislation is in place to support the highest environmental standards. The target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 should be protected with the devolved national supported to meet their respective targets.

RTPI chief executive, Victoria Hills said: "planners and the planning system have a critical role in meeting the future challenges of climate change and population growth over the coming decades.

"However, local authority planning teams have seen a reduction of 42% in funding over the last decade. We therefore call on the next Government to ensure local planning authorities are adequately resourced to enable local planning teams to deliver for communities".

The RTPI also stresses the need for new planners through apprenticeships and planning schools, which should continue to be strongly supported by the Government.

Other demands include for the next Government to:

  • protect and grow devolved powers to city regions;
  • remove barriers to city-regional spatial strategies for development and infrastructure;
  • remove legal barriers to allow city regions to fully use their devolved planning powers.
