Crumlin's household recycling facility is in line for a £40,000 renovation. The council's environmental services committee discussed the upgrading of the centre at a recent meeting, with the committee recommending that improvement works be carried out. This will include increased recycling areas and enhanced drainage, along with various health and safety improvements. It is believed the recommendation will receive full council approval by the end of February 2008.
The announcement comes just days after Crumlin councillor Thomas Burns claimed that the condition of the recycling centre has degraded to such an extent that some people are now reluctant to use the service. He also called upon Antrim Borough Council to fast track the proposed upgrade, which has been planned for some considerable time, and claimed local ratepayers were not getting value for money.
"The number of complaints I have been receiving about the recycling centre have been steadily rising and I think, to be honest, the bad weather this winter has taken its toll on the place. The main problem is that the whole surface needs to be relayed because it is now covered in so many potholes that it is difficult to walk upon. There are so many craters in the ground that on a dry day it looks like the surface of the moon. On wet days these holes fill up and you cannot walk across the yard without putting your foot in deep puddles and getting your socks and shoes soaked."
