Research carried out by environmental charity Hubbub has found that one in four Christmas jumpers bought last year was discarded after the festive season ended.
Festive-themed clothing is gaining on popularity, with the UK customers spending around £220 million this year.
The survey found, that 24% of the participants did not want to be seen in the same jumper as previous year, while almost 30% of the participants stated, that the novelty fashion is so cheap, that they might as well get a new one each year.
Christmas jumpers are cheap because they usually are made from acrylic and similar artificial fibres that have the ability to pollute our environment from microplastics. Combined with using a lot of resources to produce, process and distribute, this particular clothing item has a very high environmental footprint.
Another study found that greenhouse gases produced by the fashion industry in general releases around 1.2bn tonnes of CO2 a year, which is more than international flights and shipping combined.
