Northern Ireland recycles and composts more than it landfills

New statistics have shown that for the second quarter of 2014/2015 Northern Ireland have recycled and composted more waste than they have sent to landfill. This is a huge step in the right direction and hopefully marks a continuation of good habits.

Northern Ireland Local Authority Collected Municipal Waste Management Statistics: April - June 2014, has shown that local authorities collected 257,614 tonnes of municipal waste in the summer months.

Of all the waste that was collected 114,546 tonnes was used for recycling or composting and 105,470 tonnes of municipal waste went to landfill. In percentages, 44.5% went for recycling and composting and 40.9% went to landfill. This is a noticeable improvement from last year's statistics, which were also an improvement from the previous year.

Environment Minister, Mark H Durkan, commented: "It is good to see that we have finally turned the corner when it comes to making use of our resources. Rather than burying them in the ground, we are finding new ways to recover some of their value."
