A partnership of organisations and businesses in Newcastle-upon-Tyne who are committed to promoting healthier and more sustainable ways of growing, harvesting, buying, cooking, eating and wasting food, is organising an event which will see members of the public donning their aprons, grabbing their peelers and making a massive soup to feed around 300 people.
The event, named Disco Soup after the Slow Food Youth Movement 'Schnippel Disko' in Germany, is to be held at Newcastle's Grey's Monument this Sunday 17th August and is one of a host of initiatives designed by 'Food Newcastle' to help highlight and tackle the issue of food waste.
The food used to make the soup will be sourced from allotments, grocery stores, vegetables wholesalers and individuals, all of whom have donated surplus food which would have otherwise gone to waste.
In addition to hopefully feeding 300 people, the event will be accompanied by free live music, and any products left over will be given to passers-by.
As well as events such as Disco Soup, 'Food Newcastle' also encourages individuals and businesses to support the Newcastle Food Charter which sets out how you can make a difference through growing your own food or buying locally, cooking from scratch, as well as composting food waste and recycling packaging.
