Newcastle city skyline set for skyscraper

Newcastle's city centre skyline is set to grow as plans for a 26 story tower are approved.

The tower will house 162 one and two bed apartments, available for private rent.

DPP Planning, the company that submitted the scheme, believes the project will result in £40.5m of inward investment for Newcastle and could lead to the creation of 150 direct and 227 indirect jobs.

The company also hopes the development will result in a "significant regeneration" and a "changed perception" of the area, which could lead to an influx of people and in turn, benefit a number of local businesses.

Concerns have been raised, including suggestions the building is too tall, will be built in the wrong location and "driven by economic requirements rather than the context of the site".

56 letters of approval, however, have been received.

A derelict warehouse on the site would be demolished to make way for the landmark building and DPP estimates 387 jobs could be created:150 direct jobs, 227 supply chain roles through the demolition and construction stages, and up to 10 centre management and cleaning roles would be needed once the scheme is finished.
