Luxury cruise line is to offer chance to see global warming in action through Arctic

A US luxury cruise operator has announced it will offer a cruise to experience the environmental decay of the Arctic. This will only contribute in worsening the state of the Arctic as the mode of transport used produces three times more CO2 per passenger than a jumbo jet.

This cruise through the Northwest Passage is only now accessible as the polar ice has melted to such an extent. This makes it the first ever leisure cruise through the Northwest Passage and is being promoted to people with an interest in viewing the effects of climate change directly.

A ticket for this trip is thought to cost between $20,000 and $44,000. The trip is scheduled for 16 August 2016 and is organised by Crystal Cruises.

The trip will take up to 1,070 passengers for a 32 day journey which involves catching a glimpse of animals in the area including polar bears and seals.

Most of the journey will be upon the Crystal Serenity which is a 68 000 ton ship which will be followed by an escort vessel and helicopter.

There is no mention on the Crystal Cruises’ advertising for the boat’s massive carbon footprint.

Many are disgraced by the idea and Popular Science has described the notion as “environmental disaster tourism”.

World Ocean Observatory asked: “Is no place safe from our intrusion, waste, and consumption?”

Crystal Cruises has ironically stated on its website that there will be 14 guests on the journey to give lectures about the impacts of climate change on the environment.

Thomas Mazloum, a company executive said: “During this voyage, speakers will enlighten guests on information regarding climate change, and how it has impacted this passage.”
